DAVID ÜBER ERWIN

It is not easy writing about a man who has everything: wonderful children, a loving wife, a successful business, and every single product ever developed by Apple, Inc. How many iPods and iBooks do you have? I think Erwin secretly is getting “Thank You” cards from Steve Jobs and just doesn’t want to tell us. Or maybe Erwin is a large stockholder of Apple, Inc., and he knows that all these purchases are driving up the stock price making his portfolio even more valuable – very clever!!!!!!!.
Anyway, while spending time with Erwin, I could observe him. Two things in particular stand out in my mind that shed light on his persona: His smile and his generosity.
Erwin’s smile. Of course we see a smile when he is happy, but even if Erwin is sick or tired, the first thing I see when I meet him is a smile. Ok, maybe he just can’t resist my charming personality, or my somewhat recognizable American accent when I speak German, but I don’t think so. Erwin’s smile puts people at ease. And having people at ease is his way of making you feel welcome.
Erwin’s generosity. I can see that for Erwin the love of life does not have a price. To him, giving is a reward in itself that makes him happy. There are countless instances where I can recall Erwin’s generosity, but one I remember more than others: He invited Nicki, Nicole, my mom, the Schoenmans, and myself to Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant “Chinois,” in Santa Monica, California. Even if Wolfi is the second most famous Austrian in California (numer einz ist Herr Schwarzenegger), he told the waiter to forget the menu, but rather “bring us a variety of the BEST that you have.” Yes the food was great (remember those lamb chops!!), but I think that Erwin got the tremendous pleasure out of seeing others happy. Generosity is an essential part of what Erwin is about.
Alles gute zum geburstag!!!! Maybe for your next birthday website I will write completely in German (but wow, there would be a lot of spelling mistakes…….oy!)
